EMDR Counseling

I offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) counseling to complement our individual therapy techniques. EMDR counseling targets unprocessed emotions and details from traumatic past events, often initially experienced as feelings of being stuck. When we experience trauma, we often fail to conceptualize and feel what happened fully. This is the brain's way of protecting itself. It is known as "dissociation." EMDR counseling allows us to work through this dissociation and safely come to terms with your trauma.

EMDR counseling begins by determining what troubling memory or unresolved trauma you want to address, then using Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) to initiate your reprocessing of it. BLS works by moving your eyes rapidly back and forth, mimicking Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. Gradually, you will begin to unpack the event while maintaining your internal peace.

EMDR counseling is radically different from other modalities. It is much more formalized, with 8 distinct phases to be completed in succession. It employs set scripts to be performed in sequence. Despite this rigidity, I have found the outcomes and insights that surface from EMDR counseling to be a natural complement to Narrative therapy.

Please note that I offer EMDR counseling as a secondary provider; I work with other practices to complement their counseling with EMDR techniques. That means you do not have to stop seeing your primary counselor to see me for EMDR counseling.
